Foundations of Utility and Risk Conference

Foundations of Utility and Risk Conference (FUR)

A key element of this project is connecting with different disciplines to learn from and integrate the latest in experimental testing and AI training designs. One of the best ways to do this is through conferences, symposia, and workshops.

The second stop on the journey was the Foundations of Utility and Risk conference, held at the sunny University of Alicante (Spain). A beautiful space that uses innovative architecture to maximize the abundance of natural light while minimizing the southern heat.

This year’s conference featured a number of Keynote speakers, each a renowned expert in their field. Prof Wändi Bruine de Bruin, one of the keynotes on the second day, presented her exploration of effective communication, especially around climate change and science communication. Her evidence-backed recommendations for effective science communication:

1. Speak to the masses. Most of us agree with the ethical positions.
2. Use everyday language. Less than 3 syllables. Really!
3. Don’t bother calling it a ‘crisis’. Stick with the most popular language.
4. If you feel you must use technical language, explain what you mean.
5. Emphasise the key message in your titles.
6. Use positive framing.

Our project has progressed in expected and unexpected ways, since the last conference. We are now in the testing phase and Dr Crawford presented the experimental framework for scientific foresight. In response, we are now in the process of onboarding with new partners.
